It’s clever, very clever. Don’t let the idea of a hip hop musical put you off: Lin-Manuel Miranda has produced a phenomenal piece of theatre. And it really is quite different. Fresh. New. The songs are sharp and witty, the choreography is exhilarating, and the talented cast, who are obviously loving every moment, are a joy to watch. In the UK the subject is little-known, but this takes nothing away from your complete enjoyment of the show. If you haven’t seen it yet you should.
Transferring from the National Theatre, this is a joyful, exuberant, camp re-imagining of the Oscar Wilde classic. And it’s got a fantastic cast including Olly Alexander, Hugh Dennis and Shobna Gulati. Oh yes, and Stephen Fry plays Lady Bracknell – now that alone has to be worth the price of the ticket! Some criticise its lack of insightful wisdom but life’s too short. Just be prepared to enjoy the outrageous fun of it all.
