Monet at the Courtauld

Monet began his series of London paintings when staying at The Savoy from mid-September to early November 1899 and continuing upon his second trip in February 1900 and then again in January 1901.

He stayed in two rooms on the sixth floor, one for himself, and one, to be used as his studio where he created a selection of the masterpieces that we know today. There are three series of London pictures: Charing Cross Bridge, Waterloo Bridge and the Houses of Parliament which were unveiled in Paris in 1904. Monet fervently wanted to show them in London the following year, but plans fell through.

Views of the Thames at The Courtauld will realise Monet’s unfulfilled ambition of showing this extraordinary group of paintings in London, and just 300 metres from The Savoy, where many of them were painted. By presenting the paintings Monet himself selected for his public in Paris and London, the exhibition will provide visitors with the unique experience of seeing the show Monet curated and the works he felt best represented his ambitious artistic enterprise — brought together for the first time 120 years after their inaugural exhibition.
