Fairy lights were first seen at Savoy Theatre in its first show, Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe, which opened on 25 November 1882. Tiny electric lights powered by small battery packs were hidden beneath the folds of the fairy dancers’ costumes, and another three set into the coronets worn on their heads. The effect was sensational and the little lamps were christened ‘fairy lights’.
